How can I find out if my MP has signed an Early Day Motion (EDM)? You can access the EDM Database here. Simply type in the number of the EDM, or a brief description, and it will bring up any EDMs matching your search. You can then see the list of MPs who have signed it. Please note that Ministers are not allowed to sign EDMs, so please don't ask them to do so. Can any MP deal with my case? No, MPs can only deal with cases from people who live in their constituency, so please don't send e-mails to every MP, as it won't make any difference - they will only forward it straight to your MP. To find out who is your MP, please go to Find Your MP. My child didn't get allocated to the school of our choice, can my MP help? No. Members of Parliament deal with matters of National Government, and cannot intervene in school placement disputes. Parents should follow the appeals procedure as set out by the Local Authority, details of which are sent with the school allocation letters. You can find further information on Bolton Council's website or by ringing Pupil & Student Services on 01204 332118. Advice on appeals is also given by the Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) who can be contacted on 0808 800 5793. There is also some step-by-step advice on the DirectGov website. I've been trying to ring my MP but no-one is answering the phone. Why is this? MPs offices deal with a lot of enquiries every day, and sometimes it is not always possible to answer the phone. It might be that the staff are out of the office, or that they are busy dealing with another constituent. Please don't just keep ringing and hanging up every few minutes, just leave a message and someone should get back to you as soon as possible. Can I get my MP to write me a job or character reference? A Member of Parliament cannot write references for people they do not know personally as a friend or colleague. Can I get my MP to sign the back of my passport photographs? No, not unless the MP has known you personally for more than two years. If the MP does not know you personally, please do not embarrass him or her by asking for a signature on a passport photograph. |
