ChildLine is the UK's free, 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger. Trained volunteer counsellors comfort, advise and protect children and young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.

Over 1,000 volunteers provide a counselling service, supervised by a team of professional supervisors and managers. Every day around 4,000 children call ChildLine, but lack of funds means that only 2,300 of them will get through to our counsellors for comfort, advice and protection. 
Emergency Dentists If you don't have an NHS Dentist and you need emergency dental treatment, there are two schemes in Bolton which may be able to help.

The Rotational Occasional Treatment Scheme operates on weekdays, but you may be required to travel some distance to the dentist.  The Emergency Dental Service operates on weekday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Both services are appointment-only and can be contacted via NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Frank is an excellent website which gives plain English information on drugs.  Frank also has a confidential, free advice service which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for kids, teenagers and adults alike.  Frank has advisors who, between them, speak over 120 different languages.  You can either e-mail or phone Frank on a freephone number (and the call won't show up on the phone bill).

BRASS

Befriending Refugees and Asylum Seekers

BRASS provides a drop-in centre to befriend and support refugees and asylum seekers. Weekly drop-in sessions are held from 13:00 to 18:00 every Wednesday, and they aim to provide basic English lessons, ESOL, advocacy, IT training and access to the internet, to help with official letters and to promote social and cultural activities. They will also accompany people to appointments etc. The drop-in also has a pool table and a tennis table.

Emmaus is a registered charity concerned with homelessness and recycling.  They offer a place to live to people who have been homeless and are willing to help in the recycling business they run from the Community at Derby Barracks in Bolton.  Their aim is to become self-sufficient financially as soon as possible, by collecting and selling donated furniture and household goods.

NEARIS in Bolton is based at Bolton Socialist Halls in Wood Street in the centre of Bolton. Two main sources of funding: Bolton Community Homes provides resources for the work with refugees and asylum seekers, while Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC) funds courses for adults involved with caring agencies in the town. the Bolton project has also established successful Travellers and Family Learning projects. Learning takes place both in outreach centres - hostels, day centres, etc and at the Wood Street Centre.

What is e-bluey?

When the British Forces are deployed on operations they are entitled to free aerogrammers (colloquially known as "blueys" because of their colour) to and from their families and friends. The BFPO has now made available a system called' e-bluey ', where you can e-mail service personnel while serving on operations or exercise for more than 60 days duration.

It's a two-way system, so the service personnel can respond to their correspondents.

You have to register for the system, but it's as simple as sending an e-mail, and it's free.
