Work of Local Volunteer Celebrated by Bolton South East MP, Brian Iddon at Westminster Reception

23rd July 2007

Local volunteer Dhirajlal Jhala is celebrating after being recognised for his work in his local community at a reception in the House of Commons. Mr Jhala was invited by Bolton South East MP Dr Brian Iddon.

The event, which took the form of a tea party, was held to celebrate the work being done in constituencies up and down the country by older volunteers, who work hard in our local communities to improve other peoples lives.

MPs were encouraged to invite local volunteers who had been nominated by local organisations for their work in the community. A certificate to commend their work was produced and awards given out to volunteers who had made a particular contribution.

Dr Iddon said:

“I was delighted to welcome Mr Jhala to the House of Commons to thank him for all the work he does volunteering in my constituency and I was even more delighted when he was given the Outstanding Volunteer Award for all his hard work.”

Mr Jhala volunteers with Bolton Carers Support, Age Concern and Asian Elders, where he plays an important role in encouraging older people to keep active; he is trained in chair based exercises, Tai Chi and leads walks out into the countryside from Bolton.”

The selection of Mr Jhala to attend the tea party and receive his award was made following a campaign by CVS Bolton for all local volunteer organisations to nominate an older volunteer. Mr Jhala was then selected from amongst a number of other hardworking local volunteers.
