Dr Brian Iddon MP Hails Funding Boost for Schools in Bolton

22nd October 2007

Schools in Bolton Local Authority will benefit from millions of pounds of new investment in state of the art classrooms, arts, sports and ICT facilities over the next three years.

Dr Brian Iddon, MP for Bolton South East, welcomed the funding boost for local schools and said that it was part of the biggest sustained investment in schools for a generation.

This investment means that Bolton Local Authority will get £58,615,548 of funding for schools capital over the next 3 years to 2011. Every school will benefit in some way from this money with at least one primary school in Bolton being fully refurbished or even rebuilt.

Dr Iddon said

“After decades of neglect and under investment we are transforming our schools so they are fit for the 21st century and ending once and for all the days of leaking schools roofs, freezing classrooms and even outside toilets.

This means that by 2010/11 we will be investing 5.6% of GDP in education in the UK. This means that spending per pupil in maintained schools will rise from £5,500 in 2007/08 to £6,600 in 2010/11

But all this extra investment would be put at risk by the Conservatives. They are proposing massive tax cuts that they cannot fund, while making pledges to spend money they don’t have. Their sums don’t add up and the black hole in their spending plans will put both our economic stability and our investment in schools at risk”
