Dr Brian Iddon MP meets some very Special Constables |

2nd November 2007 The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work with and support their local police force. There are currently 14,021 Special Constables working across all 43 police forces in England and Wales. “Specials” have many different backgrounds and have very diverse careers. They dedicate a minimum of 4 hours a week to their special constable duties as well as holding down their main job. Dr Iddon said, “I was delighted to meet five of Bolton’s Team of Special Constables and to be able to thank them for the very important work they do. Special Constables provide a vital link between their local community and the regular police force and they do it all in their spare time.” There are currently 50 “Specials” working in Bolton, so far this year they have volunteered for almost 10,000 hours between them. As “Specials” have the same powers as Regular Police Officers, they have been out on foot patrol, policing football matches and community events and helping to target anti social behaviour.
