Dr Brian Iddon MP in Commons Call For More Outdoor Learning |
|
14th December 2007 Bolton South East MP, Brian Iddon has this week sought to raise the profile of the benefits of outdoor learning by tabling an early day motion in Parliament calling for more outdoor learning opportunities for school children. Dr Iddon says, “I was sorry to see the report from the Field Studies Council and the Association for Science Education concerning the decline in scientific fieldwork. One of the best ways for children to learn and understand how science works is to see it in action. I know that there are some concerns about health and safety and that teachers perhaps feel they lack the training and confidence, this is why it is so important to ensure this sort of training is a key part of their training courses.” The report produced by the Field Studies Council and the Association for Science Education makes a number of recommendations particularly with regard to the time dedicated to teaching the skills required to take children out of the classroom. Other recommendations include ensuring that those within the education system from the Department for Children, Families and Schools to Head Teachers in schools recognise and place a high value on the importance of practical work.
