Dr Brian Iddon MP Praises Free School Meal Pledge from Bolton Council in Parliament |
|
26th March 2008 Dr. Brian Iddon MP has tabled a Commons Motion this week praising Bolton Council for their commitment to introduce free school meals for all new starters for their first term from September 2008. In 2000-01 the Child Poverty in Action Group conducted a study which showed that one in three children who were entitled to free school meals were not taking them and that extending entitlement to free school meals would increase the disposable income of some of the poorest households by £27. Dr. Iddon said, “I really welcome this commitment from the Labour Group to make free school meals a universal entitlement for the first term at school as it will not only reduce the stigma attached to free meals but it will also ensure that children can learn healthy eating habits in their first term which will hopefully remain with them for the rest of their time at school.”
